Devil Ball Proving Ground: Ping i20 driver ()
Mar 28th 2012, 19:10

Welcome to Devil Ball's Proving Ground, where we put the latest golf equipment through its paces. Today we take a look at Ping's new Batman-inspired driver i20 driver. Tester -- Jonathan Wall -- Handicap: 2.7 Target Golf Audience -- All Players I've never been a Ping guy. Nearly every one of my friends has had at least one Ping club in the bag over their golfing career, but for some reason, I could never get on board with the sticks. There was something about them that just didn't look right to me. That's not a knock on the clubs, or the company, but I've always been a feel player, and if the club just doesn't feel right coming off the face (or didn't have a certain look), I usually passed. But after looking at the new Ping i20 driver, I had to give it a shot. It passed the look test right off the bat with the matte black finish. But the big question was if it would perform. How did it perform, you ask? Let's just say I'll never doubt Ping's clubs ever again. Initial Thought Every manufacturer in the golf industry boasts about how their club can add so many yards off the tee. It's a way to draw interest to their product line, and for the most part, people usually buy into the hype. While there's nothing wrong with marketing a club that way, I've seen very little hype regarding the i20. Why? Maybe because Ping prefers to keep a low-profile and let the clubs speak for themselves. The new i20 certainly does that with a slick matte black finish that makes it look like something Batman would wheel on the golf course. Throw in a black face and bottom on the driver and you have the Black Ops of drivers. Trust me, this club has a way of sneaking up on you ... but in a good way. Aside from the looks, this driver goes for miles. I put it up against my current driver in the bag (same specs and settings as the i20) and the i20 was even longer off the tee. Even better? I got about 10 extra yards of roll -- something I didn't think was possible before I met the club. With tungsten weights in the heel (to give it low-spin and a penetrating trajectory) and a traditional profile -- goodbye elongated profile -- this is a classic-looking driver with some souped up add-ons ... including a 460cc clubhead that makes missing the ball nearly impossible.

Shotgun Start: Previewing the Shell Houston Open ()
Mar 28th 2012, 17:51

It's tournament time! We head to the Lone Star State for the Shell Houston Open, the final tuneup before the Masters .   Here's a tournament primer to get you prepared for the week. The course: Redstone Golf Course's Tournament Course has never claimed to be Texas' version of Augusta National, but for one week out of the year, the course in the town of Humble does its best impersonation of the legendary track, ramping up the greens and tweaking the course conditions, all in an effort to give the tournament a major championship feel before players head to Augusta for the first major of the year. With the greens running 13 on the Stimpmeter, players in this week's Shell Houston Open field will certainly be in for a Masters-esque test. It's one of the reasons Redstone has been such a big draw right before the first major of the year. At 7,457 yards, the course is almost identical to Augusta National's current yardage (7,435 yards) and boasts some of the incredibly tricky greens that should give players a sense of what they'll be up against next week. The par-4 18th hole is the toughest on the course at 488 yards. With a lake running down the left side, players will be forced to not only hit a precise drive, but also contend with an approach shot to a green that has a lake on the left and bunker on the right. There's a reason why the hole ranked as the 35th most difficult on tour last year with an average score of +0.305 over par. The schedule: The tournament runs Thursday-Sunday. It'll be broadcast on the Golf Channel from 3 to 6 p.m. ET on Thursday and Friday, and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday; and on NBC from 3:00 to 6 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday. The field: Getting the slot right ahead of the Masters would make most tournament directors cringe -- because a majority of the top players are already on their way to Augusta -- but the decision to make Redstone as close to major championship conditions as possible, especially the greens, has paid dividends. Lee Westwood, Steve Stricker and Charl Schwartzel give the Shell Houston Open three of the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Throw in Phil Mickelson, Graeme McDowell, Johnson Wagner, Kyle Stanley and Hunter Mahan, who also be in the field for one final tuneup, and you have a tournament with a solid group of stars.

Ever wanted to own a Masters Green Jacket? Here's your chance ()
Mar 28th 2012, 17:01

Unless you're a highly skilled golfer with some serious talent, the closest any of us will ever come to putting on the famed Masters Green Jacket is watching the champion slip it on his shoulders each year during the post-tournament ceremony. Green Jackets are nearly impossible to come by these days, because unlike most tournaments where the champion is allowed to take the jacket home, Augusta National requires the iconic jacket to remain on the grounds. But that wasn't always the case. If you won a Green Jacket before 1961, you had the option to take it home with you ... and keep it in your closet. Forever. I don't know about you, but I would've worn that thing everywhere -- including through the Krispy Kreme drive-thru . Wait ... you're telling me that's already been done? Well, that's a total letdown. Anyway, the good news, assuming you're a memorabilia collector with deep pockets, is that you can now wear a Green Jacket through the Krispy Kreme drive-thru, after Art Wall, Jr.'s 1959 jacket went on the auction block on March 21st. Bidding is currently up to $33,180.00 and the auction goes through April 7th (the third round of the Masters), so if you have some loose change lying around, now is the time to scrounge it together and come up with enough to make a $33,181,00 bid.

Power Rankings: Tiger Woods returns to the fold ()
Mar 28th 2012, 14:21

It's time for the Devil Ball Power Rankings, our weekly look at who's up and who's down in the world of golf. Your panelists are an esteemed group of the world's greatest golf journalists ... or so our mothers tell us. Devil Ball Golf's Jay Busbee and Jonathan Wall, CBS Sports/Eye on Golf's Shane Bacon , and Golf Channel/Golf Talk Central's Ryan Ballengee bring you these, our rankings. Enjoy. 1. Rory McIlroy . Rory's got a careful-what-you-wish-for thing going on. Sure, he likes his girlfriend and he likes sports. But I'll bet Caroline Wozniacki gets very upset if he doesn't want to watch her play all the time. "You like sports! I play sports! Come on, Rors!" Eh, he'll be able to escape to Augusta soon. (3 first-place votes). Last week: T1. 2. Luke Donald. There's a decent chance Donald could break through this year and win the Masters or more. There's also a decent chance he could fall just short. He's the first of the post-Tiger All-Stars who rise high in the rankings without having the major-wins resume to back it up. He'd be just as happy to get off that list. (1 first-place vote.) Last week: T1. 3. Tiger Woods. Well, well, well. Look who's back. You win one marquee tournament and you're back in the picture. It's a shame we haven't been able to talk much about Woods up until now, but we'll make up for it. We promise. Last week: NR. 4. Lee Westwood . Best thing about Westwood's Twitter feed is the way he gets into fights and debates over soccer. We don't get it, but we love reading it. Last week: 4. 5. Justin Rose. Nice little T15 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Last week: 3. 6. Charl Schwartzel. If I were Charl, I'd be wearing that green jacket everywhere I possibly could. Just in case, you know. Last week: 8. 7. Steve Stricker. I bet Steve Stricker is just the tiniest bit ticked that Tiger's back. One more hurdle to get over, you know. Last week: 6. 8. Martin Kaymer. Where'd he come from? Last week: NR. 9. Phil Mickelson. Lefty does well when there's absolutely zero spotlight on him. The return of Tiger? Excellent. Last week: 5. 10. Hunter Mahan. He should wear his Golf Boys fur coat at Augusta. They'd love that. Last week: 7. Also receiving votes: Johnson Wagner: Kyle Stanley, Ernie Els, Bubba Watson, Mark Wilson, Jim Furyk, Keegan Bradley. All right, your turn. Thoughts on these rankings? Who belongs higher, who belongs lower? Have your say! Go!
