Gary Player was camped out under the big oak tree behind the clubhouse, signing autographs and posing for pictures, as he did 50 years ago. At the many snack stands scattered around Augusta National, pimento cheese sandwiches in green wrappers were selling for 1962 prices -- a buck fifty. A place stuck in a time warp, just like the men in green jackets who run it.

Masters Par 3 Contest suspended due to severe weather (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 4th 2012, 23:00

Rain seems to be the story of the week so far at Augusta National. Less than 24 hours after storms downed trees and damaged the grandstand on the 16th hole, the weather returned to the course on Wednesday afternoon to wash out the Par 3 Contest. The iconic pairing of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player on managed to get in two holes before the rains came. Jonathan Byrde and Padraig Harrington were the leaders in the clubhouse at 5-under when the tournament was called; they were named co-winners of the contest. While golf fans watching the ESPN's coverage on television only got a couple minutes of live coverage, those attending the tournament in person had an opportunity to see some special moments throughout the contest, including a couple of holes-in-one from Mark Wilson (fourth hole) and Thomas Bjorn (ninth hole). Of course, the big question now is whether Byrd or Harrington (now a three-time winner of the Par 3 Contest) can actually break the Masters curse and win the tournament. As most already know, the winner of the Par 3 has never gone on to win the 72-hole tournament.

3rd time a charm? Harrington wins Par 3 by default (AP)

This doesn't bode well for Padraig Harrington. Rain and lightning washed out the end of the Par 3 tournament at the Masters on Wednesday, leaving Harrington and Jonathan Byrd as the de facto champions at 5 under. It's an honor most golfers might rather avoid, considering no Par 3 champion has ever gone on to capture the green jacket.

Augusta National chairman Billy Payne doesn't want to talk about gender issues (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 4th 2012, 23:03

Augusta National chairman Billy Payne was more than happy to talk about a number of topics during Wednesday's Masters week press conference. Rory McIlroy, the long putter debate, course conditions, Ernie Els, growing the game of golf -- they were all open for discussion. But the second the questions turned to the possibility of the club extending a membership to IBM CEO Virginia Rometty, Payne locked up. "Well, as has been the case, whenever that question is asked, all issues of Membership are now and have been historically subject to the private deliberations of the Members," Payne said, "and that statement remains accurate and remains my statement." It wouldn't be the only time the chairman was asked about the club's all-male membership policy. More than a third of the questions posed during the press conference pertained to gender issues. But every time a media member tried to phrase the question differently, even going so far as to ask Payne if allowing a female to join the club "would send a wonderful message to young girls around the world if they knew that one day they could join this very famous golf club," they were stonewalled.

Keegan Bradley doesn't get all the fuss about being a Masters rookie. After all, he has a perfect record in the majors. Bradley became only the third player in at least 100 years to win a major in his first try at last year's PGA Championship, and says not being familiar with the course actually helped him at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Masters chances: Does Phil Mickelson have another magical Masters run in him? (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 4th 2012, 19:32

Leading up to the Masters, we'll offer up our thoughts on some of the game's best players and their chances to win at Augusta. We finish up our countdown with a Masters favorite who's currently flying under the radar. Phil Mickelson His 2012 so far: Mickelson's season has been a mixed bag. He started the year with a missed cut at the Farmers Insurance, won at Pebble Beach with a brilliant final round 64, and then went T-43, T-24 through a portion of the Florida Swing. He posted a T-4 at the Shell Houston Open just last week, so it looks like his game is trending upward at the moment. His record at the Masters: With three wins, four thirds, a fifth and a T-5, T-6, two T-7s and a 10th since '95, it's gotten to a point where he could literally show up and post a top-10 finish at the Masters. With the exception of Tiger Woods, no one in the field has had more success at Augusta National than Phil Mickelson. Why he could win: Because he's Phil Mickelson. There are a few guys in golf you'd pick to win a major no matter how they're playing, and Mickelson is certainly one of them. He knows the course like the back of his hand and already has three green jackets in his locker at Augusta National. You'd be crazy to bet against a guy with that much success at one place.

Storms could turn Masters into a birdie-fest … for the long hitters (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 4th 2012, 17:06

The storms that ripped through Augusta National Golf Club on Tuesday night most likely won't have any significant impact on Thursday's opening round. Masters chariman Billy Payne confirmed during his annual Masters week press conference on Wednesday that despite having to deal with several downed trees and washed out bunkers, the course will be ready. What remains to be seen, however, is how the course reacts to the 1.4 inches of rain that fell overnight, soaking every inch of the grounds. Augusta National has a SubAir system that should dry things up a bit in the next 24 hours, but Payne admitted that the course was still "extremely wet." And with rain in the forecast for Thursday and Friday (there's a 60 and 70 percent chance chance of shower for the first two rounds), there appears to be no end in sight. Augusta National is going to play soft, and that could play right into the hands of the longer hitters in the field. As Phil Mickelson noted during his Tuesday weather forecast press conference that the soft conditions could turn this year's tournament into a "birdie-fest."
