Well, that was fun while it lasted. A day after turning the clock back 20 years and grabbing a share of the lead at the Masters, Freddie Couples looked more suited for the Champions Tour than a green jacket Saturday. The 52-year-old blew up with a 75, and is barely within sight of the leaders going into Sunday's final round.

Bubba Watson might just win this whole doggone Masters (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 8th 2012, 00:30

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Because everyone thinks he's a deep-fried country boy — his name's Bubba! he bought the Dukes of Hazzard's General Lee car ! — it's easy to forget that the dude is dead serious about his golf game, and hands down one of the best players on the planet. Phil Mickelson's charge and Peter Hanson's improbable run may dominate the headlines going into Sunday's play, but Bubba sits just three strokes back of the lead, and he'll tee off in the second-to-last group at Augusta. Not a bad place to be, but Watson knows he can't be content with what he's got. "The other guys have been playing so good, and they are going to keep playing good," he noted after his round. "You can't expect them to back up. You have got to expect them to keep going forward. So you've got to shoot a low number." He pinpointed that number in the five-six under range. It's doable, but it won't be easy ... and it shouldn't be. Then again, there are now priorities other than golf. Watson and his wife are new parents of an adopted infant , and he told the media that "I can't wait to whenever you get done talking to me to go back there and look at him. My wife sends me pictures of him and what he's doing." Pause. "He's not doing much. He's just laying there." Still, Watson allowed that this first major after the arrival of his son would be a special one indeed. "It will be special to win it any time," he said, "but, yeah, especially for my son." He's got his chance.

Five things we learned from the third round of the Masters (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 8th 2012, 00:25

It's Masters week and there are a ton of stories going on all at once, so in an effort to condense things for you a bit, here are five things we learned from Saturday's third round. Peter Hanson can play — Even if he doesn't end up winning the Masters, Peter Hanson is a name we should all remember going forward. A quarterfinalist at the Accenture Match Play, the Swede has been playing at a high level for the last couple of years, but on Saturday at the Masters, he found another gear with a 7-under 65 that included five birdies over his final seven holes. Not to discount the round, but it's easy to score well when the entire world is watching the big names on the leaderboard. He won't have that luxury on Sunday playing in the final group with Phil Mickelson. Even if Hanson can't close the deal to become the first Swede to win a major championship, he showed us a lot of game this week. Don't forget about Bubba Watson — Nothing about the way Watson has been playing recently tells you he's ready to win a major championship, but after getting to within three shots of the lead after a 2-under 70, he's the kind of guy who could sneak up on the leaderboard on Sunday afternoon. If the players ahead of him fail to get anything going early and Watson finds his putting stroke -- something that's eluded him at times this week -- there's a good chance he could backdoor a major championship. He just needs to continue playing his game and see what happens on Sunday. Fred Couples' incredible run comes to an end — The feel-good story of the Masters failed to replicate the magic on Saturday. That's really all you can say about Couples' 3-over 75 that saw him tumble out of contention early in the day. Despite putting out of his mind all week, Couples once again failed to hit fairways and greens with regularity and when the putter finally cooled off, you knew his run was over. It was fun while it lasted, Fred.

Tiger Woods apologized. Sort of. He behaved better. Sort of. None of it made much difference. The peace of mind Woods used to know every time he stepped on a golf course is gone, if not for good, then certainly for the rest of this Masters. He will never get that back, at least not completely. It's like Superman finding out kryptonite followed him to a new planet.

Rory McIlroy sees his Masters dreams come apart on Saturday this time (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 7th 2012, 23:27

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Rory McIlroy sat on a bench at the 11th tee, head down, chewing on a sandwich that, at that moment, must have tasted like sawdust. Considered one of the two favorites coming into the tournament, and in position to seize control on Saturday, McIlroy turned in a wretched five-over 77 that went wrong from the very first double-bogeyed hole. At least this year he got the horrors out of the way on Saturday. Alongside Sergio Garcia, his inspiration as a kid , he played the front nine in an avert-your-eyes 42, a sequence that featured two double-bogeys and two bogeys. The back nine was, relatively speaking, worlds better: a one-under 35 that left McIlroy tied for 27th. McIlroy has been here before; he's held the outright lead in all four majors at one time or another, and has only managed one win, last year's U.S. Open. The round that submarines his entire tournament has, unfortunately, become something of a calling card for McIlroy. Is it any easier to take if it comes on the Saturday front nine rather than the Sunday back? That's for McIlroy himself to decide. As they left the 18th tee, Sergio draped his arm around Rory and offered consoling words that coaxed a smile out of McIlroy. It was an appropriate gesture. After all, if there's anyone who knows a thing or two about falling short of sky-high expectations, it's Garcia. The green jacket won't happen this year for McIlroy. But then again, we only need look to last year's U.S. Open to see how fast he can rebound from adversity.

Phil Mickelson puts together a sensational back-nine run at the Masters (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 7th 2012, 22:26

We've seen Phil Mickelson produce some incredible moments over the years at the Masters. When you have three green jackets people expect a certain level of golf when you step on the ground at Augusta National, but on Saturday afternoon under a cloudless spring afternoon, Phil Mickelson raised those expectations to a level the likes of which we've never seen from him at the Masters. As golf writers, we tend to throw around superlatives when talking about a great golf round. But Phil Mickelson's back nine on Saturday? We'll there really isn't a superlative that would do his finishing run justice. It was spectacular, unreal; frankly, it was the kind of stuff that left even the most ardent golf fan speechless. Early on, it looked like a Saturday charge wasn't even in the cards for Mickelson. After stringing together nine consecutive pars to start his round, he started to find his groove on the 10th, rolling in a birdie putt that would set off one of the most incredible back nine charges we've seen in Masters history. Mickelson went on to stuff his approach shot on the 12th to within 15 feet, before calmly rolling in the birdie putt that set off a roar that seemed to echoe throughout Amen Corner. He followed the birdie up by stuffing his approach shot from 207 yards on the par-5 13th to within 25 feet for eagle. It was the kind of shot that made you realize we could be on the verge of seeing something special. Mickelson was charging, and it seemed like the eagle putt was the perfect turning point ... and it certainly was, as he watched the ball disappear into the hole for eagle. Mickelson went on to birdie the par-5 15th (that included one of the greatest flop shots you'll ever see in your life) and the par-4 18th to finish off a magical round of 6-under 66 that his him sitting just one back of Peter Hanson going into tomorrow's final round. We saw some Masters magic from Phil on Saturday, but knowing him, there's a good chance he has more left in the tank for Sunday's final round.

Tiger Woods turns in an even-par round that's anything but ordinary (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 7th 2012, 20:16

AUGUSTA, Ga. - This is how rigidly the Tiger Woods public image is managed: there was a ballpoint pen in the grass outside the Augusta National clubhouse marking where he needed to stand when he met the media. Somewhere along the line, someone decided the pen sticking up out of the pristine blades simply would not do, and pulled the pen out of the ground, wiping it clean with a towel and dropping a key in its place. And then Tiger came and stood exactly where he wanted to, nowhere near the key. He was smiling, yes, but it was the clenched grimace of a man who'd rather be pretty much anywhere other than answering the same questions about what went wrong out there today and what it'll take to win tomorrow . Oh, the day started well enough. Woods birdied holes 3 and 4 to get to +1 and within six shots of the lead, but gave his gains back by the turn. He would go even par through the back nine, the same back nine he torched for -7 last year, to finish +3 and eight strokes back of the leaders, who were just teeing off as Woods wrapped his third round. At his brief postround press conference, Woods trotted out the usual platitudes about needing to play better. When pressed at the end of the conference about his behavior, specifically his kicking of a club on 16 Friday and a brief tantrum on 13 Saturday, he said, "I apologize for anyone I offended." The words look good in print, but Woods had a look on his face that said he only offered the apology because he was asked, and even then reluctantly. Woods still seems to think he has a chance on Sunday, and the way that the leaders started to fall apart on Saturday afternoon, maybe he does. But he's sitting in 40th place, depending on where the leaders finish. It's all but impossible, but then again, this is Augusta. Strange things happen here. Either way, Tiger's still got a lot of work to do.
