Golfers can only dream of playing Augusta National. Unless you are a lucky one with an exclusive invite for a membership or play on the PGA Tour, only a select few get to play the course outside Atlanta, Ga., that Bobby Jones designed and played.

When Charl Schwartzel begins the defense of his 2011 Masters Championship on Thursday, April 5, 2012, he will also be attempting something that only three golfers (Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods), each a true master of the game, have ever accomplished.

Masters chances: Can Rory McIlroy get revenge on Augusta National? (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 4th 2012, 01:51

Leading up to the Masters, we'll offer up our thoughts on some of the game's best players and their chances to win at Augusta. We continue our coverage with a guy who looked unbeatable at Augusta last year ... for 63 holes. Rory McIlroy His 2012 so far: On the PGA Tour, Rory hasn't exactly had problems, finishing first, second and third in the three tournaments he's played. He won the Honda Classic over a loaded field, and he's playing some of the best golf of his young career. His record at the Masters: He's played in exactly three Masters, and has a record of T20, cut, T15. But that doesn't really tell the story; last year he was thoroughly dominating the field when he utterly melted down on No. 10 on Sunday . Would he ever recover? Since he throttled the course at the U.S. Open, the very next major, that'd be a yes.

Most every professional golfer has those what-if scenarios that go through their mind from time to time. What if I had made that putt? What if I had hit that fairway and been able to go for the green in two? What if that approach shot had been better?

Tiger Woods seemed mildly surprised Tuesday when he was introduced at a press conference as playing the Masters for the 18th time, dating back to when he was the U.S. Amateur champion. He only made it through two years at Stanford, but he's pretty good at math. "I've spent just about half my life playing this tournament," said Woods, who turned 36 in December.

He could have used the 23 minutes to practice his putting, or check out the new slope on the 16th green. It might have been enough time for a quick lunch in the player's lounge, or a friendly chat with first round playing partner Sang-Moon Bae. Back injury forces Dustin Johnson to withdraw from Masters (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 3rd 2012, 21:22

Dustin Johnson won't be teeing it up at the Masters, and he has a jet ski to thank for forcing him to withdraw from the tournament on Tuesday. Johnson, who hadn't played a tournament since the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral, was expected to be in the field for the first major of the year until he tweaked his back while attempting to lift a jet ski, according to the Associated Press' Doug Ferguson . Johnson took to Twitter following the news to apologize to his fans and sponsors for missing the Masters. First I have to apologize to the fans and sponsors. With heartfelt regret, I won't be playing in the Masters due to a tweaked back. #imsorry — Dustin Johnson (@DJohnsonPGA) April 3, 2012 This is the second time a back injury has forced Johnson to withdraw from a tournament this year; he had to pull out of the Humana Challenge back in January. While the news is a big blow for one of the top players in the game, you have to wonder what the heck he was doing lifting a jet ski with a questionable back right before one of the biggest events on the schedule.

Masters chances: Is it Tiger Woods' time to shine again at Augusta? (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 3rd 2012, 20:52

Leading up to The Masters, we'll offer up our thoughts on some of the game's best players and their chances to win at Augusta. We continue our coverage with the most talked about golfer on the planet: Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods His 2012 so far : Woods won an official event for the first time in more than two years when he captured the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the seventh time in his career. He also has a pair of top-3 finishes in six starts this season. His Masters record: Only Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer can boast the kind of success Woods has had at Augusta National. His four green jackets are second only to Nicklaus' six, and even in the years Woods hasn't won, he's almost always finished inside the top 5 (six times in his last seven starts). Why he could win: Because his game is peaking at the right time. As opposed to years past when we questioned Woods' swing and his mental state, he comes into the Masters with a breakthrough win and a boatload of confidence. When you put both of those things together with Augusta National, you almost always get a green jacket. Woods has produced some incredible moments at the Masters over the years and the way he's playing at the moment, you have to believe he's going to make another serious run this year.

Dogs eats man's Masters tickets right before he leaves for Augusta (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 3rd 2012, 19:01

Ever heard the saying "The dog ate my homework"? Some of us may have actually used that line at one point or another in an attempt to get out of doing our homework in school. Well, folks, it looks like we got the saying wrong. Dogs apparently don't like homework; but they sure do like tickets to the Masters . The photo you see to your right would be one of Russ Berkman's four tickets to Wednesday's Masters practice round. The Seattle resident hit the jackpot and was all set to enjoy some time golfing and hanging out with a couple of buddies before heading to Augusta to take in the course and the Par-3 Contest. It sounded like a perfect plan ... until Berkman came home to find his dog, Sierra, had eaten all four of his tickets. I guess his dog didn't appreciate being left out of the trip. As Berkman told sports radio station KJR in Seattle , he was at a loss for words when he came home to find the strings from the tickets -- and only the strings -- lying on the floor. Masters trip canceled, right? Wrong. Berkman ended up feeding his dog Hydrogen peroxide -- it's safe for animals to ingest -- in an effort to get his dog to puke the tickets back up. The trick worked, leaving Berkman with a pile of puke and ticket pieces. But the story gets better. Instead of cleaning up the mess, the guy went through the puke, piecing the tickets back together in an attempt to keep to the trip on track. That's what you call dedication.

Get ready for a "birdie-fest" at Augusta National. Three-time Masters winner Phil Mickelson said Tuesday soft conditions have left the course vulnerable to a host of fearless, young golfers ready to fire away once play begins. Mickelson says Augusta's greens don't have the lightning-fast feel that causes players to shape approach shots and make cautious putts.

Teeing Off: Let's talk about Augusta National's female issue (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 3rd 2012, 18:16

Welcome to a special edition of Teeing Off. This time around, we've invited Cagewriter editor Maggie Hendricks for a frank little discussion about Augusta National and its policies toward a certain segment of the American population. Politics ahead! Busbee : The first week in April. The azaleas in Augusta, Georgia are in bloom. Every blade of grass and pine straw is in place at Augusta National Golf Club for the Masters. And if you look only at the grounds and the golfers, everything is perfect. Trouble is, we can't always run through life with blinders on, and Augusta National, more than any other sporting institution, continues to draw fire for its political stances. So, Maggie: your thoughts on the current "dilemma" Augusta faces: should it stick with its tradition of admitting the CEOs of its biggest sponsors, or should it (gasp!) break with tradition and admit a woman to its ranks? Hendricks: A WOMAN? Someone who is supposed to be making babies and dinner playing golf near the sacred azaleas of Augusta? And how can she put on golf cleats when she's supposed to be barefoot and pregnant?* Augusta's "tradition" of sexism is sad and disgusting. The fact that it's revered as a "tradition like no other" is the saddest part. CBS, the PGA and every person who tunes into the Masters plays a part in Augusta's ongoing sexism. The PGA values a pretty piece of land more than half of the world's population, and that ridiculous stance is coming to bite them in the tush now that IBM has named a woman as its CEO. Virginia Rometty has earned the right to membership, like every other CEO before her, and her anatomy shouldn't stop that. *Your awesome readers might not know me. That's sarcasm.
