Video: Martin Kaymer skips one off the water for a hole-in-one at the Masters (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 3rd 2012, 03:28

We live in a world where technology makes it almost impossible for a moment to go by without being captured on video or in a photograph. But for about 10 hours or so on Monday afternoon, one of the most incredible shots in Masters history was nothing more than a story, retold by journalists and fans that actually witnessed the shot happen with their very eyes. The shot in question? That would be Martin Kaymer following a Masters tradition by attempting to skip his ball off the water fronting the par-3 16th and get it reasonably close to the hole. But instead of just getting it close on Monday, Kaymer holed the darn thing, watching it trickle into the hole for an incredible hole-in-one. But there was just one problem: Nobody caught the shot on video. Until now. Thanks to former Devil Ball colleague Shane Bacon, he managed to come up with some video footage over at CBS's Eye on Golf (be sure and check out their fantastic work this week), we now have video proof that the shot actually happened.

Video: Tiger Woods jokes around in latest Golfsmith commercial (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 3rd 2012, 00:55

Tiger Woods doing another comical commercial?!? This can't be real, folks. The guy only does funny on occasion, and usually the humor seems to be lost on everyone but Woods. But over the last month, the 14-time major winner has produced a couple of highly entertaining ads. First it was the  Tiger vs. Shaq (for Woods' new EA Sports video game) spot, and now it's one for Golfsmith, who's promoting Nike's Speed Trials. I don't have a rating system for commercials, but if I did, this would definitely get a solid 8.5 out of 10. Well done, Tiger. ( h/t Eye on Golf )

Vegas still has Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy running one-two to win Masters (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 3rd 2012, 00:24

They may not finish one-two this week, but for at least the next couple of days, it looks like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will remain the betting favorites in Las Vegas to win the Masters. The Las Vegas Hotel and Casino Sportsbook (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton) released updated betting odds on Monday, and Woods is still the favorite at 9/2. McIlroy was second at 11/2, followed by Phil Mickelson 12/1 and Luke Donald 15/1. All in all, not a whole lot has changed with the exception of Hunter Mahan, who went from 40/1 to 25/1 following his Shell Houston Open win. You've got a couple more days to pour over the lines and lay a couple of bets before Thursday's opening round, so here's a look at where everybody stands at the start of the week. The big question is, who's going to lay the wood and bet on Mark O'Meara (1000/1) to win this week. *Crickets* So I guess I'm the only one, huh? Here's a rundown of Las Vegas Hotel and Casino's top 10 to win the Masters: RORY McILROY 4/1 TIGER WOODS 7/1 PHIL MICKELSON 9/1 LEE WESTWOOD 15/1 LUKE DONALD 15/1 ADAM SCOTT 25/1 JASON DAY 40/1 DUSTIN JOHNSON 25/1 NICK WATNEY 30/1 MARTIN KAYMER 40/1 The rest of the odds come after the jump.

Kyle Stanley, who grew up in Washington state, feels as though he's back home in the South. He played college golf at Clemson, which is about two hours away. Along with having family in the South, one thing that appealed to Stanley about Clemson was a lighted driving range that coach Larry...

Masters: Could this be the year Lee Westwood finally wins the Masters? (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 2nd 2012, 21:18

Leading up to The Masters, we'll offer up our thoughts on some of the game's best players and their chances to win at Augusta. We continue with an Englishman who's still looking for his first major championship. Lee Westwood His 2012 so far : Westwood has been his usual, consistent self so far this year, posting a second-place finish at the Dubai Desert Classic, and a fourth at the Honda Classic. Even with the top-5 finishes, he's still without a win this year, which may or may not be a big deal going into the Masters. It really depends on who you talk to. His Masters record: He's a Masters vet, having made 12 starts in the past 15 years. It's hard to believe Westwood has been coming to Augusta National for that long, but his local knowledge has certainly paid off in recent years with three top-15 finishes in his last four starts, including a second in 2010. He finished T-11 last year. Why he could win: Because he's been close before, and conventional wisdom tells you that a player of his caliber is going to break through at some point. Westwood knows Augusta National, so it's not like he's at a disadvantage this week. He hits the ball a mile off the tee and is relatively solid around the greens, two things that should serve him well this week. The only question is his mental game on Sunday, but if he gets a lead, watch out.

Charl Schwartzel shows off his green jacket after winning the Masters for his first major title.

Something is missing from the Masters this year, a tradition at this tournament that ranks right up there with Amen Corner, endless roars on a Sunday afternoon and a green jacket for the winner. Augusta National is no longer blazing with color. Azaleas that typically are bursting with red and pink already have lost their bloom, or the flowers are wilting quickly.

Masters Chances: Why Luke Donald could win at Augusta this week (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 2nd 2012, 15:59

Leading up to The Masters, we'll offer up our thoughts on some of the game's best players and their chances to win at Augusta. First up: the World No. 1. Luke Donald His 2012 so far : Four events on the PGA Tour, with a win at the Transitions and a T6 at the WGC-Cadillac. The Transitions victory helped him retake the world No. 1 ranking from Rory McIlroy. His Masters record: Seven Masters played, three top 10s, including a T4 last year. He's missed the cut at Augusta twice, most recently in 2010. Why he could win: Donald is hands-down one of the smoothest golfers on Tour, both in his play and his mindset. He's had opportunities to take and retake the top spot in the world, and unlike Phil Mickelson, he's capitalized on both. His off-the-green short game will come in handy at Augusta, and his ability to remain calm under pressure, the above photo notwithstanding, will serve him well as the energy ratchets up day after day at Augusta. Why he could lose: Sometimes Donald gets a bit too casual out on the course, and Augusta eats those kinds of players alive. You can't let the course come to you, you can't wait for the rest of the field to make mistakes at Augusta. If you're going to win, you have to do it on your own terms. Donald can do that; will he? Our take: Yes, he will. This is the year. The focus all tournament long will be on Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, but in the end this is the year Donald ascends the mountaintop, validates his top ranking, and firmly establishes himself among the best golfers of the 2010s.

Five things we learned from the Shell Houston Open (Devil Ball Golf)
Apr 2nd 2012, 15:30

Let's be honest, we're all incredibly busy. Nobody has time to sit down and watch four rounds of televised golf coverage -- unless, of course, you watch TV for a living, and if that's the case, please email us your number. So in an effort to condense the tournament coverage for you into a few quick hits, here are five things we learned from the Shell Houston Open. Hunter Mahan deserves our attention — It's funny how our outlook on Hunter Mahan's career has changed in the last couple of years. After questioning if the guy could handle pressure situations following a stubbed chip at the 2010 Ryder Cup and a winless 2011, Mahan has come out firing on all cylinders this year, winning the Accenture Match Play and then picking up another in the town of Humble, Texas at the Shell Houston Open. The name of the town seems fitting, because even though Mahan is currently the top ranked American in the world, he's done so without a lot of fanfare. But that could be changing following his second win of the season. Phil Mickelson fails to produce another magical weekend — One year after he went 63-65 over the weekend at the Shell Houston Open, Phil Mickelson couldn't find the magic again this year, even though he appeared to be in rare form after opening with a 7-under 65. A cold putter played a big part, as he missed a number of key putts inside five feet, and three-putted from inside 20 feet on a par 5. There's a lot to like about Mickelson's game going into the Masters, but the lack of success with the putter on the weekend -- especially the short misses -- was a little troubling. We can stop talking about Ernie Els' Masters chances — You want to talk about a story that was almost as played out as the "Will Tiger win" stories, the chatter about Ernie Els getting an invite to the Masters, or getting a spot via the OWGR top 50, was almost as bad. But after 18 consecutive years of teeing it up at Augusta National for the first major of the year, the streak came to an end on Sunday, as Els finished at 10-under for the week. Despite missing out on the Masters, Els now has four top-20 finishes in his last five starts. That kind of consistency is incredibly impressive -- especially considering how much golf he's played recently.
