Caddies fight at Australian Open practice area

SYDNEY (AP) - Golf officials are investigating a fight between two caddies near the practice chipping area at The Lakes before the first round of the Australian Open.

PGA Tour of Australasia officials said Friday that Grant Buchanan and Matt Kelly had to be separated after coming to blows as their players prepared for the opening round. Buchanan is James Nitties' caddie, and Kelly works for Marc Leishman.

The caddies were interviewed by tour officials and could face disciplinary action.

Tournament director Andrew Langford-Jones said "we've spoken to those involved and we still need to speak to a few more people.''

Leishman had a 2-under 70 on Thursday, leaving him four strokes behind leader John Senden. Nitties shot 77.

Sergio Garcia's four secret keys to strike it solid every time

by David DeNunzio

Last season was a good one for me. I won on the PGA Tour for the first time in more than four years, contributed two points to the winning European side in the Ryder Cup and, to be honest, felt like I enjoyed the game more than I have in quite a while. I chalk up the success to a commitment I made early in the year to control my emotions a bit better and adopt a more competitive attitude. I'd be lying if I said it was the result of a breakthrough swing discovery or a new magic move.

Nope, my technique is the same as it's always been, and the foundation of that technique is built on four key moves that have been part of my motion since day one. These are simple swing thoughts that allow me to position the bottom of my swing in the right spot so I can catch the ball... Read More

Here's a new destination for your golf bucket list: North Korea

On a cloudless morning, 15 miles west of the North Korean capital, I stepped onto the first tee of Pyongyang Golf Course and peered down the fairway of a punishing par 4, with water right, thick woods left and white stakes standing sentinel on either side. A warm wind whipped off Taicheng Lake, ruffling the flagsticks and rattling my focus. Or maybe I was shaken by the wayward shots I'd seen. My playing partner, a hungover Mongolian, had just pumped his Titleist into the pines, following a trail blazed by earlier groups, which featured, among others, a wild-swinging Finn; a Filipino with a flying right elbow; and a New Zealander who'd left what game he had in his adoptive home of China, where he ran a factory that produced edible underwear.

"Now on the tee..."... Read More

Schwartzel leads after opening round in Thailand

CHON BURI, Thailand (AP) - Seeking his first victory since winning the 2011 Masters, Charl Schwartzel shot a 7-under 65 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Thailand Golf Championship.

The South African made seven birdies in a bogey-free round at the Amata Spring Country Club, four coming in the opening seven holes, to hold a one-shot advantage over Thitiphun Chuayprakong.

``I'm very happy with the way my game has started getting back,'' Schwartzel said. ``Last month and a half, I've been able to start working on my swing again and getting my swing back to what it was a year or so ago.

``My consistency is coming back, and that to me is key.''

Third-ranked Bubba Watson (68) had an eagle and six birdies to sit... Read More

Mickelson to open season at Humana Challenge

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) - Phil Mickelson is starting his new season in the desert, only much closer to home.

Mickelson announced Wednesday he will play in the Humana Challenge on Jan. 17-20 in La Quinta, Calif. That's the same week several of golf's biggest names will be across the globe in another desert at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. Tiger Woods and Jason Dufner are among the Americans playing in Abu Dhabi.

Mickelson won the tournament in 2002 and 2004 when it was known as the Bob Hope Classic. He set the tournament record in 2004 with 37 birdies when it was a 90-hole event.

Mark Wilson is the defending champion. FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker also said he would play the Humana Challenge.

Sergio Garcia's four secrets to crisp irons

Lexi Thompson trails by three shots at Dubai Ladies Masters

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - American defending champion Lexi Thompson opened with a 3-under 69 Wednesday at the Dubai Ladies Masters, three shots off the leaders.

Shanshan Feng and Florentyna Parker both shot 66s after the first round of the Dubai Ladies Masters.

``I could have dropped a few more putts. I had a lot of lip-outs out there. But I'll take 3 under for a first round,'' said Thompson, who had two bogeys on her first four holes. ``If I can stay around there and shoot a few more under than that, I'll be in a good position.''

Shanshan, who became the first player from mainland China to win a major championship in June at the LPGA Championship, had six birdies at the Emirates Golf Club.

Parker moved into a tie for the... Read More

Thompson trails Feng at Dubai Ladies Masters

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Shanshan Feng birdied five of her first nine holes Thursday to shoot a 7-under 65 and take a four-stroke lead after the second round of the Dubai Ladies Masters.

Feng, the highest-ranked player in the field, had three more birdies on the back nine at the Emirates Golf Club for a total of 13-under 131.

Florentyna Parker, who shared the lead heading into the second round, shot a 74 to drop down the leaderboard.

Instead, Felicity Johnson (67) moved into second place, one stroke ahead of Caroline Masson (68), Cindy Lacrosse (69), Joanna Klatten (65) and Gwladys Nocera (68).

Defending champion Lexi Thompson (68) is another stroke back. The 17-year-old American survived blustery morning conditions in Dubai and made four birdies... Read More

Senden has early Australian Open lead after 66

SYDNEY (AP) - John Senden shot a 6-under 66 in calm morning conditions to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Australian Open on Thursday.

Senden had eight birdies but back-to-back bogeys at The Lakes, while Englishman Justin Rose, who birdied three of his first four holes, was level with Australians Kim Felton, Brendan Jones and Richard Green and Gareth Paddison of New Zealand after 68s.

Rose dropped his only shot of the day when he muffed a greenside flop shot on the par-4 third hole, his 12th of the round.

``I decided to try and hit the high, sexy lob - that didn't really come off,'' Rose said.

Senden had a consistent year on the PGA Tour, making 19 cuts from 22 events, including five top-10 finishes.

``The results have... Read More

As world weighs in on Old Course changes, opinions vary for St. Andrews locals

by Alan Bastable

Andrew Donaldson, a lifelong resident of St. Andrews, Scotland, manages a golf-merchandise shop just around the corner from the Old Course's 18th green. He says he's "horrified" by the controversial renovations currently underway on the game's most storied sod.

Niall Scott is a communications officer at the University of St. Andrews, who, if he cranes his neck just so, can see the first tee of his beloved links from his office window. He says critics of the remodeling should pipe down and have a little faith in the decision-making of the St. Andrews Links Trust, which manages the 600-year-old links. "They know every hump and hollow," he says. "They know what they're doing." Paul Moffat, who runs a St. Andrews B&B and regularly... Read More

Mental guru Jim Fannin trains three Average Joes to think like champs

by Connell Barrett

Can the man who helped Luke Donald reach No. 1 train three Average Joes to think like champs rather than chumps -- in one weekend? With the Blue Monster waiting to test their mental health, let the mind games begin.

In November 2003, Luke Donald visited the suburban Chicago home of mental-game coach Jim Fannin, whom Donald was considering hiring. Donald, then 25, had recently finished a winless season, with only two top 10s. The world's 130th-ranked player slid into a leather chair facing Fannin, who had been coaching baseball star Alex Rodriguez, as well as several professional golfers.

"In terms of golf, what do you want?" Fannin asked.

"Top 50 in the world," Donald said.

"Wow," Fannin replied. "Only top 50?... Read More
